My approach to teaching is largely based on eliminating the pedantic perspective that limits new learners to a needlessly formal and dull tone both in conversation and writing without necessarily considering the intended setting for which their language skills will be put to use. Therefore as most of my students are current college students or recent graduates preparing to further their studies abroad I consider that intended setting and help them prepare to interact in it. It has been a positive experience so far with many students successfully attaining their target scores with a record high score of 8.5 out of a possible 9.0 registered by a past student! Reading has not always been a strong suit for me. So, when I began tutoring college essays, I encountered students who were determined to interpret the readings assigned, mainly literature, to complete their essays. Because one of my major motivations as a college essay tutor is to help students excel in their studies, I decided to enlighten myself on how to interpret literature based on the prompt assigned. This made my tutoring experience as an English literature student easier because students would provide me with the assigned books, read over them, and assist me in understanding important aspects like themes and how each character contributed to them. In 2019, I worked with various students who needed help understanding the literature assigned, My Chinese-America by Allen Gee, where we discussed each chapter, characters, and themes via Zoom. Between 2020-2022, I had various students who were assigned poem readings and I tutored them on how to interpret and complete their essays, simply by having a credible thesis statement that assisted them to write their ideas in the body paragraphs. In 2023, I assisted an ESL speaker and writer on how to interpret various books like Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison and How Far the Light Reaches: A Life in Ten Sea Creatures by Sabrina Imbler. Her results proved that she was satisfied with my tutoring sessions.
