Diana Amon-Armah/English Language Tutor

Right from childhood I have loved English language and this love always led to scoring high grades in my English language and Literature-in-English exams. I was always the best in my class. It was not surprising then when I decided to take a degree in Linguistics and English at the university of Ghana where I completed with a first class honors. After my studies at the University I gained employment as English Language tutor at a secondary school. I taught English language and Literature-in-English for ten years at the Senior High School level. Those years were very exciting for me because of the joy of seeing my students pass their English language final exams each year! During this period , I was also involved in marking the final exams of students. Working as an assistant examiner, I assessed scripts of students at the national level. When we moved from my home country-Ghana, to the Netherlands, my first job was a volunteer teacher in an organization called English Academy for Newcomers,Groningen. During my one year teaching period there, I gave lessons to refugees from countries like Syria and Ukraine, who were preparing to write their IELTS exams. Aspects covered by this teaching program included Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. I am glad to mention that our students successfully passed the IELTS exam and were able to move on in life. I wrote the IELTS exams last January and passed with an overall band score of 7.5 and CEFR of C1.

The key to conquering the English language lies in discovering your voice! Let your story guide you!

I have a passion for English teaching, writing & music; I was a student at university, an engineer but in the 5th year I realized that it was not something my heart had an inclination towards,so I changed the university from technical to the humanities-“Philology and Journalism”-”Art and Humanities”, “Theatrical Directing” & “Spoken English”. My love for the language led me to a master’s degree in Linguistics—'Theory and Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures' in 2020; I defended my work-“The Magic Of Being Creative or Unorthodox Ways of Connecting Your Passion In Life With English”. I'd say that I have a very natural teaching style. I believe that the best learning happens when it comes out of a conversation or a discussion that you’re having. My classes are very conversational but from that conversation we’ll look at grammar, pronunciation and I’ll push your vocabulary to the next level. • Better your conversational skills and improve fluency • Get a grip on English Grammar In Use • Expand your vocabulary • Hone pronunciation • Explore fiction & creative writing • Expose your mind to creative techniques in conversational English • incorporate imaginative thinking • 'Storytelling' & 'Q&A' techniques My classes are fun, creative, and intensive so you learn a lot. But more importantly I understand from my own experience what it’s like to learn a foreign language and how important it is to really use the language and put it into practice; because it is really only by doing that that we learn to recall the words from the memory—intuitively, without thinking—and start building phrases together and create our own sentences to communicate comfortably. • Set your own hours and frequency • 24 hour toll free line for questions In my lessons you’ll expand your vocabulary and improve fluency. You’ll learn to speak confidently and communicate effectively. You’ll receive the practice and correction that you need to succeed in English.

I am trained in Math Instruction from K-8 and have built inquiry-based math programs at the 5th - 8th grade levels, including virtual and Project-Based Learning programs in middle school. During my years teaching in Brooklyn, all of my 3rd and 5th grade students all passed the NY State Math Exam. While working at the American School of Tangier, I taught math grades 5-7 while redesigning the math program and helping all teachers improve their instruction in order to re-align our curriculum and improve the school's math program. I always strive to create authentic and memorable math experiences for my students through experience, pedagogical knowledge, and innovation. I have employed a wide array of digital resources and tools to create scaffolded learning progressions with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning. For example, in a statistics unit for grade 7, students engaged with data from previous pandemics to make recommendations for governments facing different pandemic scenarios. For our subsequent probability unit, I utilized online activities from websites like Desmos and Geogebra as formative tools, as well as Google Drawing tools for students to create and design math-based strategies for virtual versions of board games like Catan. The following year, as our students prepared to return to in-person school, they designed and made plans for outdoor classroom spaces that could allow learning at our school to continue in the midst of a pandemic. I have worked with large populations of English Language Learners from vastly different math backgrounds, and analyzed their work and performance results to perpetually track their progress, identify knowledge gaps and alter lessons to plan for these gaps. I believe in using visual models and real-world contexts to help first develop the conceptualization of math before finding strategies to problem solve, and then build rigor and depth.
