English Language and Literature Teacher (Exam, Creative, Prep)

Hello everyone, my name is Michelle and I'm Irish/Cypriot and live on the sunny island of Cyprus. I have been teaching for the past five years but have always been an avid reader and writer. I have memories from childhood of filling out empty copybooks with stories, keeping long diaries and documenting my life through the written word. Since language is something I genuinely enjoy playing with, I aim to remind my students that language can produce wonderful effects and help us become more deeply understood to ourselves. I have dabbled in journalism, travel writing, poetry and more. Over the last few years, I have also dedicated time to becoming a professional astrologer where interpretation, myth and observation have been taken to new levels. I often write astrological offerings and read natal charts for people. I consider it a new language, much like what I'll be teaching you! I have 5 years of teaching experience, both within the school system ,as well as, within the realm of private tutoring where I hone in on my students' needs and reconnect them with a sense of enjoyment and interest when refining their skills within the English Language. I have prepared students for exams ranging from IELTS, to IGCSE and A Levels covering both English Language and English Literature. Whether it's getting into the nitty gritty of grammar, or language analysis in comprehension texts or whether you need help honing your literary thinking and interpretations, I'll be right there supporting you and helping you find a way to properly articulate your thinking. I help students 'hack' exams by finding simple and effective ways to fulfil task requirements and creating fun and engaging ways of remembering material. I also teach crucial essay writing skills and how to create layered and rich arguments or interpretations. Lastly, I have experience with mentoring young people with creative writing- so if you're interested in storytelling, writing your own poetry.

Human Experience and Expression

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, where my studies have fostered a keen attention to detail and a creative mindset—skills that are invaluable in creative writing. My qualifications for teaching Creative Writing are bolstered by both my academic coursework and my extensive teaching and leadership experience. I have taken specialized courses in creative writing and screenplay and film, which have provided me with a solid foundation in various forms of writing, storytelling techniques, and narrative structure. These courses have honed my ability to craft compelling stories and develop unique characters and settings. I have taught geography, human experience, and history to students from 3rd to 9th grade, demonstrating my ability to communicate effectively with young learners and adapt my teaching methods to suit different age groups and learning styles. Additionally, I have tutored math and English to students aged 4-15 at Gideon Math and Reading. This experience has strengthened my skills in teaching English language concepts and fostering a love for reading and writing among students. I founded my college's creative writing club, showcasing my passion for writing and my dedication to creating a supportive community for aspiring writers. In this role, I organized workshops, led writing exercises, and facilitated peer review sessions, helping members improve their writing skills and gain confidence in their creative abilities. My architectural studies have enhanced my ability to think creatively and approach writing from a unique perspective. The skills I’ve developed in visualizing and conceptualizing complex designs translate into a strong ability to create vivid, imaginative narratives in writing.

Creative Songwriting Screenwriter & Guitar-playing Pianist with The Muse on stand-by

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University's prestigious Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Program in Film and Media Studies, I taught myself to write songs while earning a degree focused in screenwriting and other forms of creative writing. In the ensuing twenty years I have written hundreds of songs on my own and collaborated on hundreds more, many published and released on various independent labels, along with myriad experiences in screenwriting, poetry, prose, direction, videography, musical performance, production and studio session work. I now teach guitar, piano and songwriting at a music company in Nashville and am developing my own songwriting and production business called SongCycle. Current freelance projects include a book-to-film screenplay adaptation for a noted Atlanta production company and upcoming musical releases. My extensive experience includes charting albums of my own composition, a produced screenplay, a Film Composer credit, videography work with Lucinda Williams, Brandi Carlile, Steve Earle and much more. Whether acting as songwriter, screenwriter, prose writer, poet, director, videographer, editor or tutor, it is a writer's overall aesthetic sensibility that permeates, with special attention paid to story structure, framing, syntax, linguistic reference, poetic metaphor, editing, character development and world-building.
