I believe storytelling is the key to a great essay, which I’ve been passionate about since I learned to read. I received high praise for my essays from elementary school onward, and at 16, I wrote the... script for my high school's pep rally. In university, I proofread dozens of papers on various subjects, from biology to sociology. Additionally, I have been working as a freelance editor at Wordvice, a global leader in proofreading and editing services, since July of 2023. I firmly believe that to be a great editor, you must learn to be an even better writer. Since then, I have revised admissions essays, job applications, and business documents, all with an average rating of over 9/10. Trust me when I say that to be a good editor, you must first become an even better writer. Most of my clients learned English as a second language and still struggle with its often convoluted rules and pronunciations. My name is Zachary West, but you can call me Zack. I came up in Grass Lake, a small town in southern Michigan, and I'm passionate about reading, writing, and stories of any kind. I have held a variet... y of mentoring roles since high school. I worked as a summer camp counselor at 16, where I taught elementary & middle school students about navigating trails and the local environment. Before the pandemic, I worked as a freelance instructor for Afterschool Enrichment Solutions, teaching elementary school students chess and basic coding. When my university resumed in-person classes, I served as a Peer Mentor for students with ASD, where I helped them take notes, organize their time, and manage group projects. Though I have taught a broad range of subjects, my favorites are English and Essay Writing. My favorite thing about tutoring is seeing students grow, both in skills and confidence. I believe the best way to learn is to apply the subject matter firsthand. For example, if I’m teaching active and passive voice (the cat scratched the girl vs. the girl was scratched by the cat), I would explain the difference and use both in a sentence. Then I would ask my student to do the same. Once they’re confident in their knowledge, I’ll ask them to “teach” me; a low-pressure exam of sorts. This way, I can ensure they know how to use what I'm showing them. Using this process, I aim for each student to reach a point where they no longer need assistance.
