About
I am a classically trained drummer with a strong grounding in both music theory and performance. As a native-born South African, rhythm and music were deeply ingrained in me from a young age. When I m... oved to the UK at high-school-age, this intuitive grasp of music was enhanced through a classical music education at Magdalen College School in Oxford, focusing intensively on orchestral percussion, jazz and theatre drumming, as well as choral music. As part of a choral society, I performed in Oxford’s famed Magdalen College Chapel and Sheldonian Theatre. At age sixteen, I embarked on a 10+ year career as a professional recording and performing artist with the UK band Stornoway, which toured and performed internationally on some of the world’s largest stages, including Glastonbury Festival, the Roundhouse in London, The Barbican, and Somerset House. In 2014, I left the UK to pursue music in NYC. I currently write and produce with my bands Kritters and FILLY.
Music is my life, my passion, and my career, but I also have an abiding interest in the humanities more broadly. While working as a full time musician, I gained my BA Hons in Arts and Humanities from The Open University, UK. Throughout my undergraduate education I studied literature, history, art and design, as well as music theory and composition. I consider myself a lifelong learner, with a commitment to reading deeply and widely, as well as writing, as a core component of my art practice. I believe wholeheartedly in learning not just for practical purposes, but as an end in itself: for me, learning is a process of self-discovery and self-improvement.
Music has always been a connector for me, transcending culture, race, language, age - you name it. I believe that it has the potential to do that for everyone, to deepen ties among us and teach us discipline and self-esteem, making us better students and better people.read more
