I am a professional guitarist, composer, and studio musician trained in Jazz. I majored in guitar performance for 2 1/2 years at Berklee College of Music, and I just recently transferred to Temple Uni... versity in Philadelphia. I have a deep knowledge of music theory, and advanced Jazz harmony; which I have studied for almost a decade. This includes the abilities to analyze, transcribe, play, and write complex pieces of music with minimal difficulty. Any level of student is absolutely welcome! Hello! I’m Marty Salen. I was raised on a farm in Oley, Pennsylvania, and just transferred from Berklee College of Music to Temple University to continue my Guitar Performance Degree. I have been play... ing guitar since I was a kid, and have been admiring musicians and composer’s alike ever since! Over my professional career I have gotten to study and play with some incredible musicians such as: Victor Wooten, Berta Rojas, Cecil Alexander, Grant Gordy, and many others! I have also received awards from multiple institutions including Berklee College of Music, and the Lehigh Valley Jazz Band competition. Some of my all-time favorite albums are: Yessongs (Yes), Virtuoso (Joe Pass), Inner visions (Stevie Wonder), and Charlie Parker with Strings (Charlie Parker). And some of my all-time favorite guitar players are: Wes Montgomery, Larry Carlton, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Frank Zappa, and Steve Vai. One aspect that really interested me in music was music theory. This can be a very scary term for many of us (especially guitarists), but theory is one of the most mind-freeing subjects to learn about. Being able to listen to a song and know exactly what is happening in it can open up a word of opportunities with playing, improvising, composing, arranging, and being able to impress your crush. Sharing my understanding of music and how it works (and sometimes doesn’t) shows me that learning is a never-ending cycle, and teaching is not only about telling, but about listening as well.
