About
Hello! I'm Kevin (he/they) and I'm currently in beautiful Eugene, Oregon, but I was born and raised in New Jersey. I'm a free lance composer and composition/music theory teacher.
I've always been i... nto tinkering and creating, always seeking to make things customized specifically for my tastes and functionality. Aside from writing music and poetry or prose, I love wood working and building furniture or other things to make my living space more appropriate for myself. But I appreciate all forms of creation and believe that they all blend together and have something to say to one another. I often describe musical aspects in food or construction language.
I want my students to follow what makes them unique and not fit any made up standard of how things should be, whether in the pop world, the jazz world, the classical world or otherwise. I want them to trust in their own voice and their own unique perspective because THAT is how they learn at their best! Learning composition should be an adventure as you learn about and assess the growing number of tools you have to excavate ground or blaze new trails with!
Music theory shouldn't be just a set of old rules we used to follow, it's a living and breathing aspect of culture in music and music in culture. What I love about tutoring is inspiring my students to really personalize their approach to music and watch them grow not just musically but personally as well.
I will always be that free spirited little kid who looks at stars and creates new planets.
I have experience teaching both Neurotypical and Neurodiverse students. I have ample experience accommodating for autistic students and students that have ADHD. I believe in equitable education and meeting those where they are, not expecting them to be where they're not.read more
