I had to have a through understanding of more mathematics than algebra in order to study chemistry, and I also tutored my son Douglas throughout his school career (pre-undergraduate) in all math cours... es, so I have great experience teaching concepts in math (algebra and others). I ended up with a graduate degree in chemistry from one of the most storied graduate programs in the world. However, I did not take a path that could be considered standard. Among other things that ma... de my undergraduate career unique, I took a long time to obtain my undergrqd, and I really only locked onto the chemistry courses over the last 3 years, using the first few years to focus on the other courses. Some of these were math courses or other science courses, and I do offer math tutoring as well as chemistry. When it comes to teaching/tutoring chemistry, I feel like I have somewhat of a gift. The ability I have to communicate with someone on their unique level, using a natural approach, is something that I can use to tutor other subjects also. My comfort level with the requirements that an individual has from the outset in a learning situation is where my success comes from. As one can imagine, this takes some time to nurture for a new learning partner. Over a period of perhaps 3 sessions, we can identify the issues that may be at the root of any previous resistance to learning the subject, or new subjects in general. In addition to a period of time dedicated to learning at the pace necessary for a new partnership, I would require motivation on the part of you, the person learning the new subject. This happens naturally while I learn all about your unique learning abilities. It is my opinion that the vast majority of people can learn and do well in subjects for which they always assumed they had no aptitude, or even subjects they have attempted to tackle previously.
