I developed a strong passion for English early in life, and it was my favorite subject throughout middle school and high school. I am particularly skilled and interested in writing as I have always en... joyed writing essays and short stories. My junior year of high school, I pursued higher level courses such as AP Seminar to develop my research skills and indulged in creative writing to fill up my free time. My love for writing was reflected in my grades as I earned all A's in my high school English courses and scored a 5 on my AP English Language exam. I also obtained high scores on the English, Reading, and Writing sections of the ACT. My friends often ask me to proofread their papers and provide feedback; I find it very enjoyable and they find it very helpful. Currently, I am an incoming Junior at Rice University - a private institution in Houston, TX. Thus, I hope to utilize my personal experience in the college admission process to help high school students with the writing portions required on their college applications. Hi! I'm Mia. I was born in Oklahoma, but during the school year, I live in Houston as I am a Psychology major at Rice University. I am entering my third year of college and the class I am most excited... about is Research Methods, where I will spend the entire semester crafting my own research design and writing up a lengthy paper. In my free time, I enjoy perusing the public library for new reads and managing my small Poshmark business. My main motivation as a tutor is to target young students who think that "writing is not their thing" or that "they're just bad at it." I believe that writing is a very useful skill in the real world and in our personal lives. Therefore, I believe that people are capable of developing their writing skills as long as they are willing to dedicate the time and energy to making mistakes and accepting positive reinforcement. I am interested in helping students who are nearing the end of high school and are stressed about submitting college applications, as I was recently in their place. As someone who has always been proud of their writing ability, the Common App essay was the top stressor that I had to endure during my junior year. However, as someone who has gone through that process and made it out the other end, I would love to help reduce even just a fraction of the anxiety that college application season entails.read more
