I received my bachelor's degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 2014 and my master's degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 2019. Both degrees are in flute performance and music t... heory/composition. During my undergraduate degree, I took piano classes and lessons and began teaching beginner children's piano in 2014. Since then I have mostly stayed teaching beginner children, but have also taught some adult beginners. I get the most joy from my piano lessons. Teaching children piano lessons is a fun way for me to be a small and positive part of a child's life. We learn out of the Faber Piano Adventures, which I think is an excellent curriculum that masterfully incorporates history, theory, and improvisation into the lessons.read more

Hello! My name is Alex Carpenter and I am a music theorist, flutist, and composer living in Abilene, TX. I currently teach music theory and flute at 3 private universities. I also have my own flute an... d piano private lessons studio. I have been teaching music lessons since 2011 and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I received my bachelor's degree in December of 2014 in Flute Performance and Music Theory/Composition from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. I moved to Carbondale, IL, and received my master's degree in May of 2019 from SIUC in the same double concentration. After moving back to Abilene, I began teaching at HSU in the fall of 2019. I began teaching at the other 2 universities in town, Abilene Christian & McMurry University, in the spring of 2020. After teaching in a classroom setting for 4 years, I am eager and excited to teach one-on-one lessons in music theory. I was a music theory tutor for undergraduate and graduate students during my time as a graduate assistant at SIUC and really enjoyed the ability to provide individually-paced lessons. In my private children's beginner piano lessons, I incorporate elements of music theory into as many aspects of my teaching as I can. Music theory explains how and why music sounds the way it does, and getting to share that knowledge with the student and watching them understand, learn, and experience music in a new way is the greatest gift.read more
