I am Laureano and since 2007 I live in Rochester MN. I'm currently retired from Mayo Clinic, where I worked for the last 17 years. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela where I got a degree in Biology, it was there where I had my first engagement with Statistics, and I found it fascinating. After I got my degree, I was offered a Scholarship to get a MSc in Statistics Shortly after that I was offered a position as Faculty in a local college in my Country, where I taught the subject for more than 15 years and got financial support to study overseas. After obtaining my MS in Statistics from NC State University I was hired by Mayo Clinic. A common complain I hear from students is that they don't understand why are they learning statistics, they do not see it useful for the area they are getting their degree from. The main reason is that most general statistic courses and textbooks use cooked examples that rarely touch situations that apply to their particular discipline. I try to tailor my classes using examples that resonate with them, so they can see its usefulness. Before start tutoring a student at the college level, I ask him/her what it is their Major, so I find realistic examples that teach them the general concepts in a setting that they see why they need to learn it, and not feel that is a waste of time or effort.read more
