Professional Writer and Editor, Writing mentor

I have been a strong English student since my elementary school days, which carried forward through my scholastic career. In my junior year of high school, I placed into a program allowing me to take a college writing course for credit. I also spent time copy editing for my high school newspaper. When I attended university, I placed out of English 101 and 102 based on my performance on the written portion of the assessment exams. From there, I continued to excel in written assignments, whether 500 word essays or 5000 word papers. I wrote a weekly column for my college newspaper, then became the news editor, a role in which I both wrote and edited stories. In this role, I worked with other students to not only improve their writing through editing but showing them what I edited and why. I offered feedback to help them improve. I began freelance news reporting during the last two years I was in college. From there, I became a full-time reporter for several years, before being hired by the age of 30 to become the Managing Editor of a startup local newspaper. In this role I collaborated with my staff reporters and stringers to help them maximize their abilities and reach their potential. From there, I was hired to become the Writer-Editor for a national non-profit based just outside Washington, DC. Here I wrote and edited content for a national audience, for both the organizations website, electronic newsletters and the bi-monthly magazine sent to members. I am a writer at heart, but also a teacher. When in school, I often helped my peers with their written assignments, working with them to craft and hand in written assignments they never knew they were capable of producing. I did not write for them but helped them write for themselves. I like to bring out the best in people and help them in ways they can carry forward even when I am no longer there.

Current pre-law student and tutor!

I am a current college student studying pre-law. I've been tutoring for about 5 years now. I have taught kids of all ages in math, english, essay writing, and standardized test prep. I was always really good at writing and I enjoyed it! I entered writing competitions through AVID in high school and even won a couple. I think I can offer a different perspective as a current student versus a teacher who hasn't had to write an essay for a long time! I have a little technical training in elementary/ early childhood education because I studied speech pathology with a concentration in early intervention for my first year of college, so I was training to be a speech therapist or aid. I learned about how kids learn best and how to cater those lessons to a specific child's needs. I ultimately switched to my current program because of work opportunities but I learned a lot about teaching in that year! Through that program, I worked in classrooms, schools, and in a medical setting with elementary-age kids. I got good grades through high school and participated in stem club, as well as AVID. Currently, I am tutoring a few kids in early elementary school (grades 1-3) and one in sixth grade. I prefer working with younger kids in math because it's where I have experience but I can definitely help middle and high school age kids in english, writing, and some math! Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Member-Scholarship Recipient-Experienced Remote Essay Writing Tutor

Essay Writing is a skill that every student must become familiar with for their academic careers. It also presents them with the opportunity to form valuable skills to carry forward in their lives. In addition to that importance, writing essays is fun! It enables a student to express their creativity and develop their unique voice. As a college student, I often write essays however, I also do so for fun as a creative outlet. My love of writing and genuine passion for the subject, helped me to succeed in tutoring middle school, high school and college students while working for Varsity Tutors. These one-on-one sessions would at times continue beyond one assignment and we would meet for several months to not only strengthen their writing but also increase confidence and overall academic success. While tutoring on the Paper Tutors platform, I assisted students on a chat basis when they were facing an issue while writing their essays. Using empathy and understanding helped these students to benefit from learning critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as improving their understanding of their assignments and course materials. On that platform, I would proofread essays written by students of all ages and provide them with personalized feedback. When working with a student on Essay Writing, we will use goal setting and planning to develop the best strategy for improvement based on their unique learning style. I will also do my best to help them to enjoy the process and find the fun in it. Beyond conquering any issues such as writer's block, essay structure and organization or forming a thesis, we will also improve skills that will be beneficial beyond the immediate assignment. Skills such as time management, academic research, editing and developing ideas are not only valuable parts of essay writing but important to academic success as a whole.

Master of English Rhetoric and Composition, taught English writing at the university for two years

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I am highly interested in being an essay writing tutor for Lessonpal. I love collaborating with people through writing, and I love helping people become the best writers they can be. During my Rhetoric and Composition Master’s program, I was a graduate teaching assistant for English 101 and 102. As a graduate teaching assistant, I taught six classes of English writing (from my own syllabi), where I saw numerous issues in student writing. I worked with my students one on one to help them fix their writing by going into their shared Google Drive documents and heavily editing and revising their work through comments and suggestions. Throughout all six classes that I taught, I prioritized giving my students individualized attention after every essay they turned so that they could learn from their mistakes and become stronger writers with every assignment. While I was helping my own students with their writing, I was also working with my cohort outside of class. We would have video calls from eight at night until two in the morning where we revised and edited each other's papers to ensure that we were producing high quality work for our professors. Through collaboration with my peers, we helped each other grow as writers, editors, and thinkers. We pushed each other and supported each other to become the best we could be, and I would love to take these skills and bring them to others through Lessonpal. From my experiences of teaching and being a student, I know that writing takes individualized attention. Everyone is at a different place in their writing, and everyone needs help with different things. However, regardless of the challenges that people face in their writing, I am confident that I have the skills, experience, and passion for writing, editing, and interpersonal collaboration to help others become the best writers they can be.
