I typically start by showing students the primary colors of music. The 1st, 4th, and 5th degree of the major scale. There's only 7 notes, so simple music theory is as easy as counting on your left han... d. Then I explain how once you learn one single "1-4-5 song", you basically know a milllion songs. “1-4-5” is “1+1=2” for music. There is no easier way to start off playing your favorite songs. Any other method is over complicated. IMHO today’s music school programs are obsolete, boring, and expensive. Reading music is nice, but it’s not necessary to jam your favorite songs with friends. Music = FUN. Schools should teach 1-4-5 and the 1st song taught should be Johnny B. I live in Denver at Cap Hill. Since I was 15, I have always been interested in learning songs, scales, arpeggios, tricks, theory, etc. The interest never really drifted.
