Writing Tutor / Public Speaking Tutor

My passion for writing began somewhere around fourth grade – stories, poems. Of course, from then on, there were also reports and essays I wrote for specific classes, conforming to whatever necessary parameters were required. Things really took off in eighth grade, when I wrote my first play. In addition to all school-required writing assignments I’ve always written stories and novels (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, plays, children’s books and screenplays. From middle school through graduate school and right up to the present, I’ve never stopped. I eventually became a copywriter for various marketing and advertising agencies, as well as working independently on a freelance basis for personal clients. Assignments entailed writing in every conceivable style, and writing about every conceivable subject from authoritative essays on the latest innovations in thermal insulation materials, to chemical processes involved in the washing of industrial parts, to a vegetarian cookbook about foraging and preparing meals with wild mushrooms. My work as a teaching artist has equipped me for working with students (and adults) of just about any age and the materials are always appropriately tailored to the age group or grade level. All this is to say that whatever the student’s individual abilities, or particulars of assignments, my tutoring takes all factors into account. We can look at the ways to do research, ways to best organize a given assignment (is an outline best? are index cards with key points the best? should we just start writing?). We learn to determine the right style of writing for the assignment; if need be, we’ll learn about footnotes, grammar, sentence structure, modes of expression and more. I hold the firm belief that anyone of any age can learn to write well if motivated to do so, and here is the key: staying motivated is easy by continually fostering a love of language, personal expression and always making the learning process fun.

Bachelors of Arts, Masters of Fine Arts, Actor/Playwright/Screenwriter/Novelist/Filmmaker

I have been writing novels, screenplays, plays, songs and poetry for her fifteen years. I also studied theatre at both the undergrad with a Bachelor's of Arts from Western Michigan University and graduate level with a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego. I am an expert in script analysis and story building. I like to dive deep into how to build a fictional world from the ground up, and creating characters whose motives are logical within the world that is built. My favorite genres are magical realism, science fiction, historical fiction, and crime dramas. I use my skills in writing and world building as an actor as well. I create each character as I would the worlds I create in fiction. I start with the simple traits(i.e. "what does my character carry in his pocket" "What is my character's favorite breakfast food" etc.) so that I can find a completely fulfilled character I can embody. I have acted in numerous theatre's across the country such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Seattle Repertory theatre. In these lessons I will follow the principles your instructor has laid out for you and help you reach the highest potential your work can achieve by looking for specifics and help flesh out the world and characters you are creating. I will also help you with script analysis so you can continue thinking deeper about your ideas as you continue on the path of world-building.
