I started learning violin when I was 8 years old at the public elementary school I attended. I was passionate about playing the violin, and decided I wanted a career involving music. I went to Long Beach City College (LBCC), and studied music theory in college for 5 years, and it was one of my favorite subjects. Musicianship (ear training) and music theory were always fun and interesting, and I owe it to my amazing community college professors I had at LBCC. I transferred from LBCC with an Associate's Degree in Music to California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in 2021, and was able to take advanced music theory courses, such as: Form and Analysis, Materials of Modern Music, and Counterpoint. Some other notable courses I have taken include: Orchestration, Media Scoring, Music Cultures, and Avant-Garde Music. This past May of 2023, I graduated from CSULB with a Bachelor's in Music Composition. One of my goals within the next ten years is to receive a PhD in Music Theory. I also enjoy creating compositions with theory and hope to continue writing both concert music and media music. I could not imagine both my compositions and my life without my music theory and musicianship training. For the past four years, I have been teaching violin and piano lessons to a variety of ages. I learned how to deal with students whose age or skill level vary. I found a pace that works well for them, motivates them, and shows them they can be successful and reach their goals. My informal training in music was learning songs by ear in rock bands and church music in the late sixties and early seventies. My formal training in music was at California State University, Fullerton where I had an extremely gifted professor who taught a class called, Music Theory & Sight-singing. This was a cornerstone in my education at California State University, Fullerton where I had earned a BA and MA in Music Education. I was an intermediate school choir director for 7 years and a high school choir director for 27 years. It was here where I applied my informal training in music with the my formal training. It was at the intermediate school where I had my singers put into writing what they heard by ear. This took the form of rhythmic and melodic dictation, and intervallic ear training. Then we began sight-singing short exercises that were portions from the music we were learning. I had found that, if student learn music by ear, then it helps them to hear the sound of what they are reading.
