Noel DorrOak Island, NCHigh School & College Writing and Literature Specialist
I have a master’s degree in English through Kansas State University. My teaching experience includes 15 years of teaching community college and university composition, in class and on-line.
Having established successful classroom experience as a first-year college writing specialist, I've established writing success with a diverse student population, first-generation students, HBCU students, have extensive developmental education experience, extensive Summer Bridge experience helping high schoolers to strengthen their writing skills to successfully complete college writing courses, teach reading comprehension, and have developed courses approved as transfer electives by universities across the state of Virginia.
My specialty is encouraging students to learn fundamental writing techniques from brainstorming ideas, improving grammar skills, developing organized paragraphs, developing organized, cohesive essays (Narrative, Descriptive, Process, Classification, Compare/Contrast, Thesis, and Research), as well as engaging in close reading/viewing and analysis of literature and films and subsequent response essays. High school and college writing extend on articulation and refinement in narration, description, process, classification, compare/contrast, and or research.
More advanced writing incorporates students learning how to write Annotated Bibliographies (Summary, Evaluative, Reflection), developing Works Cited, to writing researched based essays.
Literary analysis requires students to close- read short stories, novels, and analyze films to develop personal responses and research-based thesis essays comparing different works studied.
And I'm proud to add that I helped a student failing high school English become an international award winning essayist!
