Certified Teacher ELA 8-12, ESL, MFA in Creative Writing, Reading Tutor K-12, College Writing Coach

I have an MFA in Creative Writing and have completed half of an MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. That makes me a master and a half at writing! I've published stories and essays widely in top-ranked literary journals such as Texas Review, Sonora Review, and StoryQuarterly. My writing has been recognized as a finalist for the Missouri Review 2022 Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize and 2022 Katherine Anne Porter Prize. I've worked with students to hone writing skills at all grade levels. I tutor elementary, middle, and high school students with a focus on mastering sentence/paragraph structure. I review college essays through Upswing, offer feedback, and work with students one-on-one to elevate their skills. I help students achieve big goals, such as admittance into top universities and other programs, with personal statements and essays that rise above. My writing students have gained admittance to elite high schools and universities, as well as medical and dental schools. I offer students specific and personalized feedback at every step of the writing process. I have been recognized as a top writing consultant at my university (UNCW) and selected by schools as a highly effective multi-grade level writing tutor due to my ability to give customized, meaningful feedback that strengthens both the writer and their writing.

High School & College Writing and Literature Specialist

I have a master’s degree in English through Kansas State University. My teaching experience includes 15 years of teaching community college and university composition, in class and on-line. Having established successful classroom experience as a first-year college writing specialist, I've established writing success with a diverse student population, first-generation students, HBCU students, have extensive developmental education experience, extensive Summer Bridge experience helping high schoolers to strengthen their writing skills to successfully complete college writing courses, teach reading comprehension, and have developed courses approved as transfer electives by universities across the state of Virginia. My specialty is encouraging students to learn fundamental writing techniques from brainstorming ideas, improving grammar skills, developing organized paragraphs, developing organized, cohesive essays (Narrative, Descriptive, Process, Classification, Compare/Contrast, Thesis, and Research), as well as engaging in close reading/viewing and analysis of literature and films and subsequent response essays. High school and college writing extend on articulation and refinement in narration, description, process, classification, compare/contrast, and or research. More advanced writing incorporates students learning how to write Annotated Bibliographies (Summary, Evaluative, Reflection), developing Works Cited, to writing researched based essays. Literary analysis requires students to close- read short stories, novels, and analyze films to develop personal responses and research-based thesis essays comparing different works studied. And I'm proud to add that I helped a student failing high school English become an international award winning essayist!
