I got my Bachelor of Fine Arts recently with a concentration in graphic design but continued drawing in my favorite medium, charcoal. I have taken multiple drawing classes and each took a different approach to drawing in charcoal. I take these different approaches to each lesson to help the student find the approach that works for them. I also studied in Ireland for a semester focusing on finding ways to merge charcoal and soft pastel together in one drawing. This brought a touch of color into the stark black-and-white imagery charcoal creates. I have also taught this technique to a few people if one is interested in exploring this technique. I believe charcoal is the best medium for learning to draw because I feel it's very forgiving. The darkness of it gives you challenges in achieving light-to-dark transitions. You can also easily use the subtractive method which also helps to better understand the usage of other mediums.
