I am a philosopher-ethnographer from Istanbul, Turkey. My research and teaching fields are colonialism, aesthetic and social-justice action ethnography, epistemology and social construction of categories; Women and Gender Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and Area/Cultural/International Studies. My emphasis is on violence, social displacement, forced migrations, street children in Turkey. For my dissertation I conducted art and writing workshops with Kurdish youth who had to stay on the street and with Romani children who worked on the streets as they lived in squatter settlements. I taught a section of Oakes Core for UCSC's Oakes College that houses students of color, low income students, first generation college students and LGBTQI students. Since coming back to UCSC in 2017 I taught FMST 15/115 “Sexuality, Gender and Transnational Migration” five times, (it has been one of my most enrolled and sought out classes among the UCSC student body) FMST 40 “Sexuality and Globalization” two times, FMST 188 “Feminist Ethics of Belonging” three times, once FMST 01 “Introduction to Feminist Theories.”
