MA in Applied Anthropology, with practical experience in teaching and research

I have studied cultural anthropology for seven years, up to receiving my MA in applied anthropology from the University of Memphis. In particular, I have done qualitative research in cultural trends in coffee in different countries as well as an applied research project in service delivery to Syrian and Iraqi refugees. My academic experience also includes acting as secretary of a minority student organization, working as a teachers assistant during graduate school, advising current students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and teaching an intro to cultural & linguistic anthology class at SIUE. As an anthropologist, I see that culture is an integral phenomenon to every person, but the way culture takes shape and acts upon people can vary wildly. In an ever expanding and interconnected world, it is vital to help others understand different cultures and peoples to prevent misunderstandings and build bridges. I work with students one on one to meet all their academic and professional goals through a holistic approach in which I involve the student in the decision making process, consider their strengths and weaknesses, and apply my own knowledge and experience. I always encourage my students to engage in critical analysis of culture and society and even my own teaching methods so I may better deliver material and information. Furthermore, I believe that teaching anthropology should involve contextualizing a student’s lived experience so they see themselves within the broader framework, thus bringing the content into focus. I have experience using qualitative and quantitative research methodology in human research. In performing my research projects, I have gained familiarity in the moral and ethical issues that surround human-subject research. I have presented my undergraduate research project, which received the outstanding senior project award from the SIUE anthropology department, at the Society for Applied Anthropology conference. Previous Research Intern for Global Treks & Adventures LLC

I had recently graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a major in Conservation Biology and minors in Anthropology and Pan-African Studies. I also have obtained a certificate in Cultural Competencies. In June 2022, I was selected as a research intern by Global Treks & Adventures LLC to research Native Hawaiian culture, mythology, and societal structures. The internship was based in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawai'i. My primary responsibilities were to research the cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance of various land areas on the island including Mauna Kea and Kilauea. During my final two semesters of university, I had decided to take on yet another research project. I had focused my research on the cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance of the Florida Everglades in regards to the Seminole Tribe. During this research, I had the opportunity to interview the collections manager of the South Florida Archaeology Department through the Florida Museum of Natural History located in Gainesville, Florida. As part of my final requirement to obtain my degree, I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Honduras in June 2023. It was here that I had been given the opportunity to, once again, research the cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance of different land areas throughout Honduras. I had learned of how the land itself had changed over the years and how this change had altered the livelihoods of the Indigenous communities throughout Honduras. Throughout my studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, I had taken various Anthropology courses. I had studied various Indigenous cultural groups hailing from all parts of the world. My strong suits are Native American cultures. I had left Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a 3.8 GPA in my Anthropology minor, a 3.5 GPA in my Pan-African Studies minor, and a 4.0 GPA in my Cultural Competencies Certificate. I will be willing to provide transcripts if necessary.
