Katie BurkKihei, HIViolin, guitar, piano, ukulele, voice, songwriting
When it comes to music, I joke that I am a "hack of all trades!" I play piano, violin, guitar, ukulele, sing, and write songs. I genuinely love many styles of music and look forward to learning your favorites.
I originally trained classically, but started playing and singing more by ear around 2008, when I first discovered bluegrass jams and the "Oh Brother Where Out Thou?" soundtrack. I've performed professionally for fifteen years as a fiddler and vocalist, in the styles of American roots, bluegrass, newgrass, jazz blues, pop and folk songs.
I have been a teacher for over twenty years (art, music, math, language arts), and music specifically for eight years. I encourage my students to think of their relationship with music as a lifelong pursuit. I enjoy learning of new bands and musicians through my students and hearing what inspires them. My students inspire me to be a better (and braver!) musician and communicator.
I will meet you where you're at now, and help you nurture your lifelong friendship with music-making! :)
