For the past five years of my early professional life, I have utilized my extensive history knowledge and engaging personality to teach and inspire young minds. As an undergraduate student at Sarah La... wrence College, I explored my intellectual fascination with political history, researching the great thinkers and theorists who have shaped and critiqued the political, legal, and economic structures of the United States and Europe. After graduating college, I naturally gravitated towards teaching roles which allowed me to share my passion for history and political science with inquisitive children. Between 2020 and 2022, I taught sixth-grade history at Success Academy in New York City. In this position, I utilized my creativity and humor to engage middle schoolers in an advanced curriculum that covered my intellectual interests. These topics include the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, Capitalism, and Imperialism. During my first year of teaching, I gained extensive experience learning the fundamentals of Zoom teaching during COVID. Most recently, I have worked as a public history educator at Plimoth-Patuxet Museums. I primarily interpret at the Mayflower II site. Hello, I am Colin! As a teacher with ADHD, I will make you Pay Attention and Excited to learn history. I subscribe to the philosophy of John Dewey - we learn Best by DOING IT! We also should not be bo... red. If we can learn from the four best teachers of all time - Socrates, Mr. Rogers, John Dewey, and Mr. Keating from Dead Poet's Society - you need to be funny, and you need to put the thinking work on your students. The other alternative is speaking to a brick wall, an all too familiar occurrence for any human being that's ever gotten in front of a room. Enough about my pedagogy, which is the the narcissistic teacher's word for their own opinion. Let's talk about my life. I developed my passion for history because of the inherent need to know the "why?' I was that kid that didn't shut up, saying "What's that? Why? Why mom?" When I got older, I just found more sophistical ways to question and annoy. Specifically, history, somehow, allowed me to get good grades for exhibiting my nonconformist tendencies. My parents were relieved I found a productive outlet to question and alter the conditions of life, even if that enthusiasm was tempered with their moderate concerns about the financial utility of history and the liberal arts. I guess they didn't anticipate the online tutoring industry. I have taught world history for two years as a sixth grade teacher in the Bronx at Success Academy. Currently, I am a public history educator aboard the Mayflower II. I especially connect with the revolutionaries of history.
