When I started tutoring, I was still in nursing school
0:03
and I was the only tutor available at my program.
0:07
In fact, I was probably the first tutor
0:09
that had been available there for years.
0:11
But when I graduated, there was nobody there to replace me.
0:15
Now my school had both, uh, an accelerated BSN program,
0:19
which is what I had gone through.
0:20
And they also offered a, uh,
0:22
a slightly longer two year a DN program.
0:25
Uh, and so when I left, some
0:30
of the students I had been tutoring from the A DN program,
0:32
they still had two semesters or more to go.
0:36
So they had no help and they felt lost.
0:40
Um, and they ended up calling me again.
0:43
Now, of course, I was stressed out, being a new grad,
0:46
having my first job, trying to navigate things.
0:49
I also got pregnant at that time.
0:51
My husband and I, uh, had got pregnant with our first child
0:54
during that time period.
0:56
But these students, they just tug at my heart
1:01
'cause I love helping nursing students figure out
1:04
nursing school and make it click.
1:06
So they started this, I had this group of four
1:09
or five women that I had been helping
1:13
and they had been committed to tutoring regularly.
1:15
They started coming to my house every week
1:17
and we would do tutoring together,
1:19
not just me teaching them, but teaching them how to think
1:23
because I knew I couldn't tutor them forever for free.
1:27
And so I wanted to empower them
1:31
and equip, equip them to be able to feel confident
1:35
to do nursing school themselves so
1:37
that they could teach themselves how to think like a nurse
1:40
and they could study the information in a way
1:41
that made sense to them without relying on a professor
1:45
or even a tutor like me to spoonfeed them the information.
1:49
And it worked because every single one of those, uh,
1:56
women did graduate, um, and are successful nurses.
1:60
They've all gone a different paths.
2:02
Some of them I'm still in touch with.
2:03
And, um, I love seeing
2:06
the wonderful nurses that they've become.
2:08
And what was really meaningful for me is that
2:12
when they graduated, they got me
2:16
a music box.
