Hi friends, this is Mr.

0:02

J and I'm a music teacher here on Lesson Pal.

0:06

I've been teaching music for more than 25 years.

0:09

I've taught music in public and private schools.

0:12

I was a vendor with a charter school.

0:15

I had an afterschool program.

0:16

Um, I did a combined guitar

0:20

and ukulele class in a community center,

0:22

but mostly what I've done

0:24

is one-on-one lesson either in people's homes

0:27

or more recently via Zoom.

0:30

I've had students as young as kids in preschool,

0:34

and I've had students who are graduates of medical school.

0:37

Primarily, I teach the ukulele using the songs

0:42

of the Roaring Twenties from Speakeasies and Vaudeville

0:45

and Tin Pan Alley and pre-code musicals.

0:47

This is the first music that I ever listened to as a child

0:51

before the Beatles, uh, from my parents

0:55

and my grandparents collection of 78 RPM records.

0:59

I also teach country blues, uh, when I cover open tuning,

1:04

slide guitar, finger picking,

1:07

and a technique called shuffling.

1:09

The reason I like teaching the blues in early jazz is

1:13

that they're not only genres of music

1:16

but their formats, uh, which means there's a structural,

1:21

a structure common to many, if not most of the songs.

1:25

So you're not just learning individual songs,

1:30

you're learning how dozens, if not hundreds

1:33

of songs operate.

1:35

Uh, the chord progressions in the early jazz largely are a

1:39

circle of fifths changes.

1:40

And in the blues, it's a format known as 12 Bar Blues.

1:46

Uh, and there's also a circle of fifth songs, um,

1:49

in the, in the Blues.

1:51

And of course, you'll learn what that is.

1:53

Uh, we can, um, I also teach music from the sixties, the,

1:59

the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, the Turtles,

2:01

the Loving Spoonful,

2:03

or practically any other song from the sixties.

2:06

Or we can work on something you like from a Disney musical

2:10

or some other song that you're fond of.

2:14

Uh, feel free to email me

2:16

and, uh, you can try one lesson at a time

2:19

or you can sign up for four.

2:21

Thanks very much. Take care. See you soon. Bye.
