Hi, I'm Lynn. I'm a lesson pal tutor.

0:04

I have a PhD in mathematics from the University of Virginia.

0:08

That's the school that Thomas Jefferson built.

0:10

My tutoring started as an undergraduate math major. He needed extra money,

0:15

but when I started tutoring people, I realized I really liked it.

0:18

Even when I went to graduate school where I had a teaching assistantship,

0:23

I taught two courses a semester for the university,

0:26

but still had private tutor students and in the evenings and in the summers,

0:30

sometimes I would teach at local community college. I liked teaching.

0:34

Then I was a professor of mathematics or six years at a college.

0:38

Taught all the undergraduate courses, especially a lot of statistics,

0:43

and I got more and more interested in it,

0:45

and eventually left college and got a job as a professional statistician

0:50

working for companies that maybe you've heard of, capital One, Wells Fargo,

0:55

general Electric.

0:56

I could take my math and statistics background and apply it to real world

1:01

problems. I'm a unique blend of the theory and the application.

1:05

Now, what can you expect from me in a tutoring session? One, it's a safe place.

1:11

You can ask any question you want. Sometimes when you, you know,

1:15

math builds on top and top, blah, blah, blah.

1:18

Sometimes when you have a problem here,

1:20

it's 'cause you miss something down here.

1:22

Or maybe your teacher didn't explain it to you in a way you understood.

1:25

We'll work on it. We'll fill in the blanks. Number two,

1:29

I want you to be a problem solver.

1:31

A job is where someone pays you to solve their problems.

1:35

So problem solving skills are the best skill you can skill set you can have,

1:41

and math and statistics just helps you to organize your mind for solving

1:47

problems. That's where they make you a problem solver. The last thing,

1:51

I want you to be a self learner.

1:53

I don't want you to always depend on your professor or your tutor.

1:56

I want you to be able to approach problems and to think about them yourself.

2:01

That's my ultimate goal is for you to be a self-learner,

2:07

to feel confident enough to do that. Now,

2:12

that's my philosophy. Sign up for a class, see how it goes.

2:17

I don't think you'll be disappointed.
