About
Luke is an expert in mechanical design, with a focus on opto-mechanical prototypes and tooling, and significant experience in the development of scientific instruments and industrial systems.
As the ... Lead Opto-Mechanical Engineer of the Input Optics System on the Nobel Prize winning LIGO project, Luke played a critical, long-term role in the discovery of gravitational waves. As an author on the discovery, Luke is a co-winner of both the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and the 2016 Optical Society of America Team Engineering Excellence Award.
Later, Luke moved into industry and worked as a mechanical design engineer with REO/Excelitas in Boulder, solving a wide variety of industrial opto-mechanical problems, and also tutoring the entry level engineers how to use Solidworks to make solid models, assemblies, and technical drawings.
Currently he is building a new startup, Optomech-CNC.com, to design and fabricate tooling and prototypes for scientific research and the optics and semiconductor industries.
Outside of his work as an engineer, Luke spends about half of his time as the Director of Development at santuariosantafe.com, a biodiversity sanctuary and sustainable farm in Quindio, Colombia.read more
