Hi I'm Heather! I was a Nanny for several years before teaching at-risk children in and around Atlanta Georgia in the US. I am passionate about Equity and Inclusion when it comes to Literacy and want ... to help correct the incredible mistakes made, beginning decades ago with something called "Reading Recovery" which has (unfortunately) been at the forefront of why so many children struggle with reading. The simple view of reading states:
Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC)
Unless a child can decode each letter sound and blend in language, they can't comprehend the word they are reading, least of all understand the context in which it is used.
I love children and they love me. Although my work is 100% steeped in Science, it's also fun. I work in a very relaxed and supportive way that does NOT make students wrong for not knowing how to read. I talk to them in terms they can understand about how their brains learn.
