I am passionate about English. In high school, it was my favorite subject and I tested above average in my college entrance exams. Although I am not an avid reader, I love literature and enjoy reading... about history which coupled with my experience as a tutor has helped me hone my skills and delivery. I am keen on teaching spoken English to non-native speakers (ESOL). I am currently running a private online tutoring practice based purely on referral, helping students prepare for the spoken part of the IELTS language test. It is quite interesting as well as rewarding. I love witnessing the growth in confidence, the ability to express ideas and converse with fluidity in my students over time. To me teaching ESOL is not just about language learning it is also about equipping someone with the capacity to navigate conversations considering the nuances of context and ensuring that they can still showcase their personality despite limitations in vocabulary and experience speaking in English. My approach to teaching is largely based on eliminating the pedantic perspective that limits new learners to a needlessly formal and dull tone both in conversation and writing without necessarily considering the intended setting for which their language skills will be put to use. Therefore as most of my students are current college students or recent graduates preparing to further their studies abroad I consider that intended setting and help them prepare to interact in it. It has been a positive experience so far with many students successfully attaining their target scores with a record high score of 8.5 out of a possible 9.0 registered by a past student!
